Politics: Obama and the Middle East. A week of cognitive dissonance and failure

By ROBERT LAURIE - Sunday morning, Obama and his administration continue to deny Libyan reality
Friday afternoon, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney took to the podium and informed the press that the uprisings in the Middle East were solely directed at an offensive Youtube video. They had nothing to do with the Obama administration, a hatred of the United States, or U.S. foreign policy.
At almost that exact moment, thousands of rioters were in the streets of Afghanistan chanting "Death to America", and "death to the enemies of Islam” before they burned an effigy of Barack Obama.
It was, perhaps, the Obama administration’s signature moment in its response to the violence that was spreading across the globe. The statement was disassociated from reality, easily disproven by events taking place elsewhere, and an affirmation that the President was utterly unwilling to deal with the truth of the matter at hand. It was bizarre display, reminiscent of the Iraqi information minister’s rambling 2003 denials that the U.S. was pressing into Baghdad – while our tanks were rolling by in the background.
You’d think it couldn’t get any worse. You’d be wrong. This morning, thanks to the Sunday news shows, the Obama administration managed to one-up itself.
During an interview with Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice doubled down on the Youtube malarkey.
"What sparked the recent violence, was the airing on the internet of a very hateful, very offensive, video that has offended many people around the world,” she said. "This has been the proximate cause of what we’ve seen this week."
She also appeared on ABC’s “This Week” to claim that the destruction of our Libyan embassy was not pre-meditated, saying “Our current best assessment, based on the information that we have at present, is that, in fact, what this began as, it was a spontaneous – not a pre-meditated – response to what had transpired in Cairo.”
Just like the Carney lie, events were transpiring elsewhere that would directly contradict Ambassador Rice, once again making the administration appear to be out-of-touch with reality.
Over on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Libyan President Mohamed Yousef El-Magariaf, was being interviewed by Bob Schieffer.
"The way these perpetrators acted and moved -- I think we, and they're choosing the specific date for this so-called demonstration, I think we have no, this leaves us with no doubt that this was pre-planned, determined," Magariaf said. "It was planned, definitely. It was planned by foreigners, by people who entered the country a few months ago. And they were planning this criminal act since their arrival
Magariaf claims that over 50 arrests have already been made, and those in custody hail from multiple nations. "They entered Libya from different directions. Some of them definitely from Mali and Algeria,"
Since the murder of four Americans and the destruction of our Libyan embassy, evidence suggesting the attacks were premeditated has been piling up. Nearly every worthwhile foreign policy observer has come to the conclusion that the Youtube video was little more than an excuse – a catalyst capable of riling the Islamic world. It’s a cover story, nothing more.
Yet, for whatever reason, the President and his people absolutely refuse to come to the same conclusion. Why they so staunchly oppose the truth is not the issue. Their intentions no longer matter. What we’ve witnessed over the last five days is a direct result of their inaction, their inability, and their cognitive dissonance.
Obama has failed, and continues to fail, on a truly epic scale.
